The Australian Recruiter Salary and Comission Landscape – Salaries & Commissions

What Can You Really Earn as a Recruiter in Australia?

A straight-talking guide to base salaries, commission structures, and how to negotiate the best package for you.

Recruiter salary Australia is one of the most common questions I get asked. Australia is genuinely one of the best markets in the world for experienced recruiters. Salaries are strong and commissions are often uncapped. Relocating from the UK, Ireland, Scotland, or New Zealand? Your skills transfer exceptionally well here.

If you are a recruiter thinking about making a move, whether that is within Australia or relocating from the UK, Ireland, Scotland, or New Zealand, understanding the earning landscape here is one of the first things you need to get your head around.

The good news? Australia is genuinely one of the best markets in the world for experienced recruiters. The salaries are strong, the commission structures are competitive, and if you have a solid billing history behind you, you have real leverage at the negotiating table.

Here is what you need to know.

Base Salaries: What to Expect

Base salaries in Australia vary depending on your experience, the sector you recruit in, and the city you are based in. As a broad guide:

  • Recruitment Consultants generally earn a base salary between $75,000 and $90,000 plus superannuation (super is Australia’s compulsory retirement savings scheme, paid by your employer on top of your salary at 12% of your earnings)
  • Senior or experienced recruiters can command $95,000 to $130,000 plus superannuation. It really depends on your experience and your billing history.
  • Technology and IT recruiters with 3 or more years of experience are consistently among the top earners, with base salaries averaging around $105,000 AUD
  • Recruiters relocating from the UK, Ireland, or New Zealand with strong billing histories often secure packages at the higher end of these ranges, or above them

When it comes to location, Sydney and Melbourne typically offer the highest base salaries, reflecting the cost of living and the volume of business moving through those markets. Brisbane is competitive on base salary and is quickly catching up to Sydney and Melbourne.

Please note: these figures are indicative and based on current market activity. I would always recommend speaking with a specialist Rec2Rec to get an accurate read on what is realistic for your specific background and sector.

Commission Structures: Where the Real Earning Potential Sits

The base salary is just the starting point. The commission is where it gets interesting, and in most agencies, it is completely uncapped.

How commission typically works

Most agencies in Australia use a threshold model. The standard looks like this:

  • You need to bill three times your base salary before commission kicks in
  • Once you hit that threshold, you earn commission on everything above it
  • Commission rates generally sit between 30% and 40% of revenue generated above the threshold
  • Charge out fees to clients for permanent roles range from 14% – 18% and contract margins range from 20% – 20%
  • Some boutique agencies offer higher commission percentages, particularly for strong billers
  • Most agencies supply a phone or cover your phone bill, a laptop, and a LinkedIn Recruiter licence

Boutique versus large agency: what is the difference?

This is a question I get asked constantly, and the honest answer is that it depends on where you are in your career.

At a larger agency, the commission threshold is still typically three times your base salary, but the commission percentage tends to be lower. The trade-off is access to bigger accounts, well-known corporate brands, and a higher volume of inbound work. If you are earlier in your career and want the infrastructure, the training, and the brand behind you, a larger agency can be a smart move.

At a boutique, the commission percentage is often higher and the threshold can be more achievable. You will generally have more autonomy, a more focused market sector, and a closer relationship with leadership. If you are a strong biller who wants to feel the direct financial reward of your efforts, a boutique model is worth looking at seriously.

There is no right or wrong answer here. The best structure is the one that matches where you are right now and where you want to go.

Tips on Negotiating Your Package

When you go through a Rec2Rec, they will do this for you. High quality recruiters are in genuine demand in Australia right now, and you have more leverage than you might think. Here is how to approach it.

  • Know your numbers. Your billing history is your strongest asset at the negotiating table. Come in with a clear picture of what you have billed over the past two to three years, your average fee size, and the types of roles you have placed. The more specific you can be, the stronger your position.
  • Think about the total package. Negotiation is not just about base salary. Ask about commission structure, flexibility, professional development support, and any other non-financial benefits. Sometimes the difference between two offers comes down to things like working from home arrangements or a clear pathway to a senior title.
  • Use your Rec2Rec. This is genuinely one of the most valuable parts of working with a specialist Rec2Rec. I know what my clients are willing to pay, I know what is negotiable, and I can advocate on your behalf without any of the awkwardness of a direct salary conversation. A good Rec2Rec will also negotiate threshold-free periods where possible, to make sure you get off to a smooth start. Having a Rec2Rec negotiate two or three offers at once for you will naturally assist in getting you the best package on offer.
  • Do not undersell your international experience. If you are coming from the UK, Ireland, Scotland, or New Zealand, your experience is genuinely valued here. KPI-driven work, consultative billing, and the ability to operate in a competitive market all translate extremely well. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
